While spending a few weeks in Bath with a family friend, Catherine meets and falls in love with Henry Tilney, who invites her to visit his family estate, Northanger Abbey. ![]() The story's unlikely heroine is Catherine Morland, a remarkably innocent seventeen-year-old woman from a country parsonage. A wonderfully entertaining coming-of-age story, Northanger Abbey is often referred to as Jane Austen's "Gothic parody." Decrepit castles, locked rooms, mysterious chests, cryptic notes, and tyrannical fathers give the story an uncanny air, but one with a decidedly satirical twist. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Fighting some of the most spectacular battles in ancient history, he dragged Rome into a long round of wars and threatened to invade Italy itself. The Poison King describes a life brimming with spectacle and excitement. In this richly illustrated book-the first biography of Mithradates in fifty years-Adrienne Mayor combines a storyteller's gifts with the most recent archaeological and scientific discoveries to tell the tale of Mithradates as it has never been told before. But until now no modern historian has recounted the full story of Mithradates, the ruthless king and visionary rebel who challenged the power of Rome in the first century BC. His life inspired Mozart's first opera, while for centuries poets and playwrights recited bloody, romantic tales of his victories, defeats, intrigues, concubines, and mysterious death. European royalty sought out his secret elixir against poison. ![]() ![]() ![]() If only I could make Andy realize that he doesn’t need to change himself for love. Whether they were lovers or not - and no one really knows how the Ancient Sumerians would have felt about a gay couple - the intensity of Gilgamesh's love for Enkidu, whom he loves "as a woman", is the driving force of the epic. I definitely find myself leaning towards agreeing with the homoerotic interpretations of their relationship, and they almost certainly served as an inspiration for pairings such as Achilles and Patroclus, and Jonathan and David. My favourite part is, not surprisingly, the relationship between Gilgamesh and Enkidu. I should point out that, though a little dry, it's not difficult to read at all - at least not in the English translation that I read - and can be read in a single sitting if you have a couple of hours to spare. ![]() The translation is a little wooden, and the rather dramatic series of events reads almost like a textbook. This is one of those cases where I really wish I could read and understand the original text. And I get chills just thinking about how this narrative reaches across the millennia and takes us inside the minds of people who lived so long ago. ![]() One of the most fascinating things about The Epic of Gilgamesh is how you can easily see the influence it has had on Homer and Judeo-Christian-Islamic mythology. There is something very humbling about reading stories written more than 4,000 years ago. “I will reveal to you a mystery, I will tell you a secret of the gods.” ![]() ![]() ![]() We documented consistent seasonal predation of stink bugs by big brown bats. Specifically, we used a new high-sensitivity molecular assay for invasive brown marmorated stink bugs ( Halyomorpha halys) to examine the extent to which big brown bats ( Eptesicus fuscus) detect agricultural pests in the landscape. We tested the hypothesis that temperate insectivorous bats can be important sentinels of agricultural insect pest surveillance. Innovative pest detection strategies, such as environmental DNA (eDNA) techniques, combined with efficient predators, maximize sampling resolution across space and time and may improve surveillance. Timely detection of pests is critical for management efficiency. ![]() Invasive insect pests cost the agricultural industry billions of dollars annually in crop losses. ![]() ![]() ![]() Additionally, Min Farshaw, who had traveled with the Salidar Aes Sedai, reunites with Rand and gives him much-needed emotional support. ![]() In an unsuccessful attempt to control Rand, Alanna Mosvani of the rebel Aes Sedai bonds Rand as her Warder against his will. Together they form the Black Tower, which trains male channelers called Asha'man. In response to Rand al'Thor's amnesty on male channelers, Mazrim Taim swears allegiance to him. Not only is she the best-selling novelist of all time ( certified by the Guinness World Record folks), her works continue to be extremely popular despite being products of their age, with descriptions and class attitudes that are either charmingly old-fashioned or alarmingly conservative, depending on your own views. A hundred years later, few people know his name, and if they know the title of his most famous work, it’s probably because of Richard Pryor.īut Christie is something else entirely. A favorite example is George Barr McCutcheon, who had several bestsellers in the early 20 th century - including "Brewster’s Millions," which has been adapted to film seven times - and was quite the literary star. ![]() Most authors - even best-selling authors who won awards and enjoyed huge sales of their books - fade away shortly after they die, their work falling out of fashion. Agatha Christie is one of the rare writers who has completely transcended pop culture to become a more or less permanent fixture in the literary filament. ![]() |
